Abstract The first control group: (control group)normal rats received the standard diet for 15 days. The second group: (ulcerated group), in which peptic ulcer was induced by oral Administration of 5 ml /kg of absolute ethanol (95%) on 24 h empty stomach. With standard diet. The third group (chitosan treated group), in which the peptic ulcer was induced as described with the second group followed by the administration of chitosan 1 ml orally The fourth group rats were provided with a standard diet along with administration of chitosan 1ml orally for a period of 15 days, Then the ulcer waS induced as described with the second group. The ulcer lasts for 15 days. After the end of the experiment, samples were collected from stomach tissue and from Gastric juice and examination of antioxidant enzymes and other biochemical analysis. Chitosan had significantly improved therapeutic effects on ethanol-induced Gastric ulceration in rats. The underlying mechanisms of its promoted therapeutic effects might involve the good ability of gastric tissue repair, reduction of oxidative damage, high radical scavenging activity and its inhibitory effects on neutrophil infiltration. In this study histopathological examination of gastric tissue from chitosan treated group showed better mucosal healing effect with significantly decreased Hemorrhage, necrosis and erosion lesions. Present study showed that chitosan may be used as a Potential therapeutic drug for gastric ulcer. |
