Abstract

Abnormal uterine bleeding is one of the commonest conditions for which patients come to the gynecological outpatient. It is responsible for more than one-third of gynecologic consultations and nearly two-thirds of hysterectomies. (1) It attributes as a cause for 25% of total gynecological surgeries performed by a gynecologists. (2) Abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB) is defined as any variation from the normal menstrual cycle, including any change in regularity or frequency of menses, or in the duration of flow, or in amount of blood loss. Abnormal uterine bleeding occurs in 9 to 14% of women between menarche and menopause, significantly affecting quality of life and imposing financial burden. (3) Abnormal uterine bleeding is an outcome which has several etiological reasons. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) have approved a classification system for abnormal uterine bleeding. It classifies the causes into two categories structural and functional. (4) Ability of transvaginal sonography (TVS) for screening the lesions within the endometrial cavity is limited. The finding of a thickened central endometrial complex seen on TVS is often non-specific and may be caused by an endometrial polyp, sub-mucosal fibroids, endometrial hyperplasia, carcinoma, or cystic atrophy. Focal lesions are under diagnosed at TVS because of limitations of the double-layer thickness evaluation.
