Abstract

Risk management in healthcare includes the clinical and management systems, processes, and reports used to detect, monitor, assess, mitigate and prevent risks through the use of risk management that proactively and systematically protect healthcare organizations for patient safety.
The present study was aimed at designing a nursing risk management system at El-Demerdash University Hospital through: assessing nurses’ knowledge regarding nursing risk management system, assessing nurses’ performance of nursing risk management activities, designing a nursing risk management system, validating the developed system.
The study was conducted in critical care units at El-Demerdash University Hospital which affiliated of Ain Shams University. Subjects were included in the study (61) nurses and (30) members jury group.
Three tools were used to collect data for this study. A Knowledge assessment questionnaire that includes the definition of risk, the risk management process and the role of the risk manager in the organization, an observation checklist included the risks that the patient is exposed to while hospitalization from interventional procedures, non-compliance of nurses with infection control policies and patient safety goals, incident report and commitment to hospital plans, and opinionnaire experts’ sheet to verify the verify the proposed risk management system
The study has generated in the following findings:-
• None of them had satisfactory knowledge about the risk committee, risk manager role, type of infection before designing system.
• More than three quarter of the studied nurses had unsatisfactory knowledge about medication rights.
• Nobody of the studied nurses had adequate performance about incident report notification and evacuation plan at hospital before designing system
• There was highly significant statistical strong positive correlation between total knowledge and total performance after system designing. There was insignificant statistically differences in nurses’ knowledge and performance regarding their personal characteristics before and after designing system.
• These results supported the research hypothesis which states that nurses’ knowledge and performance about nursing risk management will be enhanced after designing the system. Regarding total knowledge, mean knowledge was (58.34) before system, increase to be (88.42) after system designing. Regarding total performance, mean performance was (505.57) before system, increased to be (1023.88) after system.
• There were unanimous agreements of the jury group members upon almost all items of the face, content validity. Concerning the risk management system, with agreement reaching 100%.
