Abstract

SARS-CoV2 was initially detected in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, and since then, it has spread rapidly to pandemic. It causes a wide range of clinical symptoms, from asymptomatic infection to mild respiratory disease to severe multiorgan failure and even death.
Patients with ESRD on MHD are particularly vulnerable to COVID-19, due to their own diseases, low immune function and close contact with the hospital. High mortality rates of HD patients with COVID-19 are not limited to the initial hospital stay period but also continue in the first year after the diagnosis.
Malnutrition is a common problem and a risk factor of mortality in HD patients. Furthermore, patients recovered from COVID-19 may suffer from malnutrition which may occur as a result of decreased food intake, elevated gastrointestinal and cutaneous losses, olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions, hypercatabolism brought on by a high level of inflammation, and muscular wasting.
Incidence of psychiatric disorders among ESRD patients on HD was high. Depression and anxiety disorders, which are frequently accompanied by insomnia are the most common psychiatric disorders among them which and linked to a considerable deterioration in overall quality of life. Also, COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated increased prevalence rates of generalized anxiety disorder, depressive symptoms and sleep disturbances.
The aim of this study was to determine the clinical impact of COVID-19 on the nutritional status and psychological aspects in Egyptian ESRD patients on maintenance HD.
This study was a cross-sectional cohort study included 60 ESRD patients on maintenance HD for more than six months selected from HD unit at Medical Research Institute and Faculty of Medicine, Alexandria University.
They were divided into 2 groups:
group I: 30 ESRD patients on maintenance HD diagnosed with COVID-19 within six months from recovery from infection (20 patients were diagnosed by CT chest with a positive pulmonary abnormality in accordance with the radiological standards for COVID-9 infection and detection of serum anti-SARS-COV-2 Ig M and IgG antibodies and 10 patients were diagnosed by positive PCR).
group II: 30 ESRD patients on maintenance HD without COVID-19 and not vaccinated.
All patients were subjected to personal history, medical history including co-morbidities and etiology of ESRD, dialysis history with assessment of adequacy of HD using KT/V as well as clinical symptoms of COVID-19 and clinical examination.
