Abstract

Summary
Nursing is one of the largest professions and it plays a significant role in healthcare systems’ constant changes. Job security is a critical factor behind quality care delivery. However, it is still unclear whether job security is related to turnover intention among nurses. Nursing shortage has faced hospitals in different countries around the world, with serious challenges in providing quality and safe services to their clients. Job security is a featured benefit of the nursing career (Wise, et al., 2023). Nurses will always be a necessary part of the healthcare system, and hospitals are unable to function without them. Even in times of economic uncertainty, nurses are always able to find positions in which to work. The job growth outlook for nurses is excellent with the aging population. Job security is an excellent benefit for anyone interested in a career as a nurse (Bakr et al., 2021).
The present study aimed to assess nurses’ awareness about actual role and its relation to job security through; assessing the level of nurses’ awareness about actual role, assessing the level of job security as reported by nurse and determining the relation between nurses’ awareness about their actual security role and job security.
Study design:
A descriptive correlational design was utilized to achieve the aim of the present study.
Study setting:
The current study was conducted in medical and surgical units at Benha University Hospital.
Subjects:
Simple random sample of (300) nurses who were working in previously mentioned study settings at Benha University Hospital within inclusion criteria, having at least three years of work experience, accepted to participate in the study and available at the time of data collection.
Tools of data collection:
Data of the present study was collected by using the following two tool; First tool: Actual Role Awareness Questionnaire; A structured questionnaire was developed by the investigator after reviewing the related literature, aimed to assess level of nurses’ awareness of actual role dimensions, it included two parts. First part: Included Personal data of the study sample. Second part: It includes different items to assess the nurses’ awareness about their actual role and included ten dimensions covering (79)items as follows; Direct care role (18 items), Indirect care role (14 items), Administrative role (7 items), Communicator role (9 items), Educator role( 5 items), Advocator role(12 items) and Researcher role (5 items) ,Developing clear role (3 items) , Self-development role (3items) &Time management role (3 items) .
Tool II: Job security Questionnaire: A structured questionnaire was developed by the investigator after reviewing the related literature to assess nurses’ job security dimensions. It included ten dimensions covering 38 items as follows; Comfort in job (4 items), Organizational justice (6 items), Job prospect and stability (3 items), Organizational climate (4 items), Wages and salaries (2 items), Relationships with managers and colleagues (4 items), Rules and regulations (4 items) , Work environment (2 items), Job retention (7 items) and Benefit perception (2items) .
The study has generated the following findings;
 The most (98.7%) of the nurses had high level of awareness regarding their actual role
 The most (99.0%) of the nurses had high level of awareness regarding their advocator role care provider and administrative roles. Also, more than one quarter (29.0%) had moderate level of awareness regarding their time management role.
 the highest mean scores ( 35.74 ± 0.97) with means percent ( 99.2 %) of nurses’ awareness about their actual roles were related to advocator role .While the lowest mean score ( 7.80 ± 1.61) with mean percent (86.6 %) of nurses was related to time management
 The most (95.0%) of the nurses had high level of awareness regarding their job security.
 The most (91.3%) of the nurses had high level of job security regarding comfort and Job retention in job. Also, more than half (54.6%) had moderate level of job security regarding their Wages and salaries.
 There was highly statistically significant positive correlation between nurses’ total levels of awareness of their actual role and their job security.
In the light of the findings obtained from the present study, the following recommendations were suggested:
For hospital management:
• Assess the clinical learning needs of new nurses periodically and develop a training program for them to the challenges facing in the real work environment.
• Periodically update and develop job descriptions for the different nursing positions.
• Enhance mutual respect and effective communication between nurses and other hospital staff.
For the nurses:
• Collaboration should be promoted to nurses through support, empowerment, and motivation in clinical area with follow up for their role performance.
• Provide feedback to the nurses to assess weaken and strong points of performance and enhance their performance.
For further researchers:
• Replication of the study on large sample size and different setting to generalizes the results.
• Suggest measuring the quality of Baccalaureate nurses performance of their role.
• Design training program about job security among nurses and explain how effect on actual role of nurses.
