Abstract

Introduction: Esotropia is a disorder of ocular alignment characterized by an inward deviation of the eyes. Esotropias are the most common form of strabismus, making up more than 50% of pediatric ocular deviations. There are three types of comitant esotropia often requiring surgery which are infantile esotropia (IET), non-refractive accommodative esotropia (NRAET) and partially-accommodative esotropia (PAET). Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to evaluate the post-operative ocular alignment in patients with comitant esotropia which was primary adequately corrected, and to determine if preoperative characteristics affecting this outcome. Patients and methods: The study was carried out on thirty patients with established diagnosis of comitant esotropia, requiring surgery and who met with all the inclusion criteria. All patients underwent complete ophthalmologic examination in each eye before and after surgery, including primary observation of any abnormal signs, assessment of fixation and visual acuity, determining if there was amblyopia or not, cover / uncover tests, ocular motility tests, prism alternate cover test, modified Krimsky test with amblyopic, uncooperative or non-fixing children, cycloplegic refraction, anterior segment examination by slit-lamp and fundoscopic examination. Amblyopia was treated pre-operatively as much as possible. All patients in the study had esotropia surgery, mostly bilateral medial recession (76%), and 13% unilateral medial rectus recession, and the rest (10%) underwent unilateral medial recession and lateral rectus tuck. Follow up of patients was done in the postoperative period for 6 months. The outcome at 6th month post-operatively was compared with certain pre-operative characteristics, which are: • Age at onset of strabismus. • Age at strabismus surgery. • Type of esotropia. • Presence of amblyopia. • The preoperative deviation angle. • The pre-operative refractive error.
