Abstract Lead time quotation in a make to order manufacturing systems plays an important role in this type of manufacturing systems. Quoting reliable and short lead time can increase customer satisfaction and give a positive effect on the company’s reputation. Each firm has to identify its performance indicators and works to improve these indicators to guarantee the optimum performance and efficiency. Previous researches revealed that by increasing the manufacturing system performance, the lead time can be short and accurately quoted. This thesis considers a multistage manufacturing system where customers order various types of products with determined batch sizes and are interested in quoting a short lead time. The production line that represents the manufacturing system is modelled and simulated by discrete event simulation (DES) to identify the actual performance of the production line and estimate all factors affect the lead time which are then modelled using design of experiment. All bottlenecks that occur on the production line are identified and eliminated by conducting Theory of constraints (TOC). Optimum performance is selected based on the data envelopment analysis (DEA) to select the most effective scenario which has the shortest lead time with maximum throughput rate and highest resource utilization level. |
