Abstract

Choosing heavy equipment is one of the difficult tasks in the field of construction, as the cost of heavy equipment represents about 30% of the total cost of the project, so the correct choice of equipment is one of the most important reasons for the success of the project. Because of the many complexities and the difficulty of implementing infrastructure projects, and it is consider a vital facility for any country, thus it was important to complete these projects on time and at an appropriate cost, which made the process of choosing the optimum equipment in digging trenches for water and sewage lines, gas lines and electricity cables an important matter and a great challenge for decision-makers, due to the presence of a lot of equipment that differs in the cost of its operation, maintenance and production. So, this paper aims to the ideal solution to this problem by using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) to compare and analyze between these many alternatives, taking into consideration the site conditions and project specifications. A model is made by selecting trenching equipment and consists of main criteria and sub-criteria, these criteria have been identified and collected through the opinions of scientists and experts in the field of infrastructure. The main criteria consist of four, and each of them consists of several sub-criteria. Interviews are held with expert engineers in the field of infrastructure to evaluate the criteria affecting the selection of trenching equipment in order to analyze this data through the AHPDSS. Model is applied to the sewage lines of The Beit Al-Watan project is locatednorth of Al-Rehab City in New Cairo City. Finally, the available alternatives to choose from are identified. The alternatives are 1) Hyundai HW210A, 2) Dossan DX300LC- 7crawler excavator, 3) Dossan DX1000LC-7crawler excavator, 4) VOLVO EC480D, 5)CAT large excavator 352, 6) CAT medium excavator335. Results areanticipated to be of major significance to decision-makers and help inreaching the optimal equipment through analyzing the data in the AHPDSS.
