Abstract

Epicardial fat thickness (EFT) is a direct measure of visceral fat. Two- dimensional (2D) echocardiography can accurately measure EFT. The current study aimed to evaluate role of EFT in prediction of coronary artery disease (CAD), number of affected coronary vessels and diabetic nephropathy by 2D echocardiography.
Epicardial fat thickness was considered an independent risk factor for CAD and affected coronary vessels in diabetic patients. Also, we found that EFT was considered an independent risk factor for nephropathy, CAD and affected coronary vessels in all studied patients.
So, EFT assessment is simple non-invasive tools for prediction of nephropathy and CAD and its severity. In addition to traditional cardiovascular risk factors, EFT may be useful in determining the risk of cardiovascular disease. Multi center future studies are warranted to confirm such results.
