Abstract

Breast surgeries encompass a wide scope of procedures from breast enhancement to oncologic mastectomy and reconstruction. One common feature they share is the significant postoperative pain experienced by patients, with some studies showing that over 50% of patients undergoing mastectomy and reconstruction experience pain up to 1 year postoperatively. Although breast surgeries can significantly improve quality of life and be curative in cases of malignancy, acute and chronic postoperative pain can be severe and cause functional impairment. Although research in breast surgery is constantly evolving to provide better aesthetic outcomes with fewer complications, postoperative pain still remains a burden for patients and an unresolved challenge for surgeons.
