The study aimed to understand the role of both Gelotophobia and social anxiety in predicting healthy behavior among a sample of obese and normal-weight individuals. Additionally, it sought to determine whether there is a statistically significant relationship between Gelotophobia, social anxiety, and healthy behavior among obese and normal-weight samples separately. The study also aimed to explore the extent to which Gelotophobia and social anxiety, as independent variables, contribute to predicting the variance in healthy behavior as a dependent variable among samples of obese and normal-weight individuals separately.
Study Results:
1. There were statistically significant differences between obese and normal-weight individuals in the mean scores of Gelotophobia and social anxiety, with differences significant at (0,01) in favor of the obese sample. No significant differences were found between obese and normal-weight individuals in healthy behavior components.
2. There were no significant differences between males and females in the obese sample regarding Gelotophobia and social anxiety (worries) and healthy behavior. However, significant differences were found between males and females in the obese sample in social anxiety (avoidance), significant at (0,01) in favor of obese males, partially confirming the second hypothesis. No significant differences were found between males and females in the normal-weight sample on all study variables except for social anxiety (worries), which appeared in favor of normal-weight females. Significant differences were also found between males and females in the normal-weight sample in social anxiety (avoidance), significant at (0,05) in favor of normal-weight females, partially confirming the second hypothesis.
3. Significant differences were found between urban and rural obese individuals in fear of ridicule only, in favor of urban individuals, while differences in healthy behavior were not significant. The hypothesis also indicated significant differences in social anxiety (worries, avoidance) between urban and rural obese individuals, significant at (0,05) in favor of urban obese individuals. Significant differences were found between urban and rural normal-weight individuals in social anxiety (worries, avoidance), healthy personal behavior, and the total score of healthy behavior, in favor of urban normal-weight individuals. Differences in healthy dietary behavior were not significant.
4. There were no statistically significant differences between different educational levels in the study variables.
5. There was a positive relationship (not significant) between fear of ridicule, social anxiety, and healthy behavior among normal-weight individuals, and a significant positive relationship at (0,01) between fear of ridicule, social anxiety, and healthy behavior among obese individuals.
6. Gelotophobia and social anxiety, as dependent variables, contributed to predicting healthy behavior among the obese sample. Their contribution to predicting healthy behavior among the normal-weight sample was relatively weak and did not reach the required level of statistical significance, with the adjusted determination coefficient for Gelotophobia,s contribution to predicting healthy dietary behavior not exceeding (0,03).
Keywords: Gelotophobia, social anxiety, healthy behavior, obese, normal-weight.
