Abstract

Vitiligo is an acquired , progressive , multifactorial, depigmenting disorder characterized by the appearance of circumscribed white macules in the skin due to chronic progressive loss of functioning melanocytes in the
epidermis.Multiple hypotheses have been proposed to clarify the etiology of
vitiligo, including genetic, cytological, immunological, neurological, impaired antioxidative defense and environmental destruction of the
melanocytes. However, there is strong evidence that vitiligo is mainly an
autoimmune disease, because of its association with other autoimmune
diseases, anti-melanocytes and other organ-specific autoant ibodies.Cathelicidin an antimicrobial polypeptide, is an important part of
innate immune system. It has anti-inflammatory and pro-inflammatory
effects. There is a possible role of cathelicidin in autoimmune and
inflammatory diseases, such as inflammatory bowel diseases, RA and
systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Also altered level of cathelicidin was
noticed in some chronic cutaneous disorder such atopic dermatitis, psoriasis
and rosace
