Abstract

Background: Respiratory symptoms are tachypnea, hypoxemia, retractions, and crackles. Failure to thrive, tiring during feeding, and weight loss are frequent symptoms in young children. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL), or one’s quality of life as it relates to health status or disease, is increasingly recognized as an important patient centered-outcome by leading health organizations, HRQOL is a subjective, dynamic, and multidimensional concept that includes domains representative of an individual patients’ goals, values, and beliefs.
Aim and Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the HR-Qol in child to an aged-matched healthy population and to identify the factors that were associated to an altered QoL.
Subjects and Methods: A case-control study was conducted on 26 child cases and 26 aged-and gender-matched healthy controls at the Pediatric Pulmonology Department, Children’s Hospital, Ain Shams University over one year to compare the HR-Qol in child to an aged-matched healthy population and to identify the factors that were associated to an altered QoL.
Result: There were non-significant differences between the ChILD and the control group regarding sex (P = 0.052) and age (P = 0.403), study revealed that the chILD group had significantly lower physical scoring (P= 0.000), emotional scoring (P= 0.000), social function scoring(P= 0.000), cognitive scoring (P= 0.000), and total QoL scoring (P= 0.000) in comparison to control group. There were positive correlations between the QoL scoring and Spo2 during rest and exercise (P < 0.001). There was also positive correlation between the QoL scoring and social class score (P= 0.030). Regarding the multiple linear regression analysis, Fan staging, respiratory distress grade, number of PICU and ward admission/year, Spo2 during rest and exercise and social class score were the most significant predictors and influencing variables in the ChILD group
Conclusion: Study revealed that in the evaluation of Quality of Life (QoL) scoring between the ChILD group and the control group, significant poor scores were recorded in the chILD group in comparison to the control group and study revealed also that (QoL) scoring has negative relation with two factors as Fan staging, Frequency of hospital admissons, and positive relation with social class score and Spo2 during rest and exercise.
