Abstract

Hair is a natural fiber that is made up of keratin molecules that coil together to form an alpha helix shape. There are many amino acids that enter hair structure including cysteine, glutamine, arginine, and citrulline. Hair shaft fractures have a wide range of types and forms that can be hereditary or acquired. Aim: To study the plasma and hair levels of cysteine and glutamine in patients presented with hair shaft fractures in comparison with normal healthy hair as control. Methodology: This study was divided in to two groups: group 1 included 20 female patients presented with hair shaft fractures. group 2 included 10 healthy females with normal hair shaft to serve as a control. For all patients, clinical and trichoscopic examinations were done to evaluate the severity degree of hair shaft fractures. In addition to assessment of biological markers including plasma and hair levels of cysteine and glutamine were done.
