Abstract

Guidelines for the diagnosis and Otitis media with effusion (OME) is defined as the presence of fluid behind an intact eardrum without signs or symptoms of acute infection (otalgia, fever, and irritability). The condition is also known by other names such as glue ear, fluid in the ear, and serous or secretory otitis media. Twenty-five percent of these cases are incidentally detected during routine checkups.
Despite the apparent absence of symptoms, the potential impact on hearing, speech, language, and comprehension highlights the need for timely intervention. It is the most common chronic otological condition in children after viral upper-respiratory-tract infections. It involves a change in the mucociliary system within the middle-ear cleft, leading to the accumulation of fluid under negative pressure.
management of otitis media with effusion (OME) have been issued by several well respected organizations: (Ito et al., 2017).
• In 2016, the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) released updated guidelines, endorsed by the American Academy of Family Physicians (Harvey et al., 2016).
• The University of Michigan Health System (UMHS) updated its guidelines in 2013, revising recommendations from 2007.
• The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidelines in 2008, reaffirmed in 2011, primarily focusing on surgical interventions (Omata et al., 2017).
These guidelines serve as valuable resources for healthcare professionals managing OME.
