Abstract

This study aims to analyze Libyan students’ mistakes in order to investigate students’ problems in understanding university medical courses at the Higher Institute of Medical Sciences in Libya. The study sample consists of 31 male and female students, who were randomly selected and assigned to experimental and control groups. The data used were collected through a test design (pre- and post-test) for equivalent groups. The experimental groups are taught using the reading comprehension strategy, while the control groups are taught using traditional procedures. The results of the pre-test show that there are some areas that pose problems for students and need to be particularly emphasized and practiced. The researcher then evaluated these strategies in improving students’ skills in understanding medical texts after taking the post-test. The results indicate that the experimental group outperformed the control group in the tests, and the study also confirmed that these strategies have a significant positive impact on students’ comprehension. The thesis is divided into four chapters and a conclusion: Chapter One: IntroductionThis chapter provides an overview of reading skills and the difficulties that students face in understanding medical texts and the reasons behind these difficulties. It also presents the objectives and importance of the study. This chapter also includes previous studies. Chapter Two: Comprehension strategies while readingThis chapter discusses the theoretical framework of the current study, presenting: comprehension strategies during reading and their importance in improving students’ comprehension. Chapter Three: Study MethodologyThis chapter discusses the methodology used in the current study, providing a detailed description of the design and study participants, and explains data collection and analysis procedures. Chapter Four: Results and DiscussionThis chapter includes a presentation and discussion of the results reached by the researcher. Conclusion: This chapter emphasizes the importance of using reading comprehension strategies to improve students’ comprehension and understanding of medical texts, and also includes some of the suggested recommendations regarding these strategies.
