Abstract

Sensory integration therapy is based on receiving various types of sensory stimulation, including visual, auditory, tactile, proprioceptive and vestibular senses to achieve effective interaction between the child and the environment, and eventually result in a proper cognitive, motor behavioral, and emotional development.
If sensory integration is impaired, environmental stimulation cannot be properly accepted and the development of the learning potential to either change or adapt to the environment in response to stimulation would be disabled, resulting in difficulty in functional performance in daily life. A variety of SIT protocols are applied to address the difficulties due to sensory integration deficits.
The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of sensory integration therapy in children with NDD and to identify the disorders that are most benefited by SIT. Results showed that there is a significant improvement in children with ASD and IDD compared to those with SLD, ADHD, DCD.
Therefore, SIT should be a basic component of the intervention programs designed for children with ASD and IDD.
Children diagnosed with ADHD, SLD, DCD should be assessed using more specific/sensitive tools for each disorder, other than the standard use of short sensory profile to screen all patients presented to the SIT unit, this will aid establishing a clearer baseline for their conditions as well as presenting more accurate results of their actual improvement.
Finally, although our results should be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size, it concluded what the previous literature has agreed upon and that SIT yields promising results for children with ASD and therefore parents of these children are increasingly turning to sensory integration treatment to help their children deal with the disorder.
