Abstract

”This study aims to cultivate cyanobacteria in an economical way using beet filter cake waste from sugar industry. The first part of the study included the large-scale production of single-cell protein from Spirulina platensis using beet filter cake extract (BFCE) as an alternative medium to Zarrouk medium through optimized culture factors. The second part included the cultivation of another cyanobacteria Leptolyngbya sp. on BFCE and the crude phycocyanin extract from this isolate was used to synthesize selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs), characterize it by different techniques and then apply it in the biological sector. These results indicate that the improved BFCE medium can be used to cultivate Spirulina platensis without affecting the protein content and at the same time reduce the impact of BFC waste on the environment. Crude phycocyanin was extracted from Leptolipinia grown on BG11 medium and 75% BFCE to verify its ability to biosynthesize selenium nanoparticles (Se-NPs). By converting the blue color of the phycocyanin extract to orange or red, confirming the formation of selenium nanoparticles. In addition, other standard methods were used to further confirm the synthesis of selenium nanoparticles.
