Abstract
Condensation of anizoin and resorcinol in presence of sulphuric acid followed by methylation with dimethylsulphate of the crude so obtained gives 6-methoxy-2,3-bis-(p-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran. Nitration of I yields 5-nitro-(II)and 5,7-dinitro-6-methoxy-2,3-bis-(p-methoxyphenyl)benzofuran (III).
