Abstract

The present investigation was concerned with toxicity assessment of twenty two industrial effluents polluting the Great River Nile and demonstrate their hazardous impact on the ecology. The twenty two industrial effluents belonging to eight different industries including glass industry, cement, detergent, chemical fertilizers, sugar industry, Iron and steel, drinking water treatment and grain grinding. Majority of these industrial effluents were collected from factories in the great Cairo region, especially Shobra El-Khima, Helwaan and Hawamdia districts. Some industrial effluents were collected down stream of the River in Banha, Kafr El-Zaiat and Talkha. Toxicity assessment was carried out by the international test algal strain Selenastrum capricornutum with free and immobilized cultures.
