Abstract

Sugarcane is one of the most important economic crops in Egypt as it represents the main source of refined sugar and the only source for molasses industry. Because, sugarcane is a tropical crop and needs sufficient amount of water resources, it is therefore cultivated in Upper Egypt in an area of about 286.000 feddans. There are many diseases affecting sugarcane productivity among which are viruses, bacteria, fungi, etc. Sugarcane streak virus (SSV), is one of the geminiviruses diseases which causes reduction in the quality and quantity of the sugar industry. Sugarcane breeders pay a lot of effort to control the disease through breeding resistant or tolerant varieties of sugarcane.
