Abstract

As writing specification involves handling a great amount of information items, microcomputers documentation facilities have been extremely utilized to prepare the specification document and the other contract documents. However, the computerized contract documents have been chiefly produced as prints. Thus, the benefits resulted in retrieval of the computerized specification softcopy have not been completely utilized. On the other hand, due to the retrieval merits of the computerized documents softcopy, the practice of computerized documents preparation as a hypertext and hypermedia has been prevailing. A hypertext (or hypermedia) document allows the user to instantly jump between the related items of information, which are arranged nonlinearly. Moving among these nonlinear items is available via hyperlinks, which can be activated by using the mouse for allowing the user to jump instantly between two linked items of information. Fortunately, hyperlinks application facility is available in the prevailing microcomputer operating system and programs, which are used to produce the contract documents. Thus, this thesis has proposed hyperlinks utilization for enhancing the writing quality of the computerized specification with maintaining the linearity of the specification texts by applying hyperlinks to integrate:
• Specification texts and the referenced information items.
• Video and computer graphic scenes to the specification.
• Specification items and the contract drawings, in addition to segregate these drawings onto drawing-layers related to the specification sections.
• Specification items to the bill of quantities.
• The bill of quantities and the relevant cells in the quantity survey spreadsheet.
• The planning activity list and the specification.
• The table of contract contents and the contract documents to allow the contract users to jump between the table of contract contents and the intended contract document.
Although the proposed hyperlinks utilization gives the contract documents softcopy the merits of hypertext and hypermedia documents, printing the softcopy procures the traditional prints. To discuss the need for hyperlinks applications, the following procedures have been adopted. First, the standard format of the Construction Specification Institute (CSI) has been used to address the specification items required cross-references and references, and the specification items required to be accessed from the proposed activity list. Second, the computerized contract documents of a construction project has been used as a case study for the proposed hyperlinks applications.
