Abstract

The purpose of this investigation is to conduct a comparative study between the effect of two additives upon soma physical and mechanical properties of clay soils.
The experimental program was designed to study the effect of calcium chloride and sodium chloride upon the treated soils. Different percent ages of the two additives were added to the chosen soil to study its effect upon Atterberg limits, the optimum moisture content, the maximum dry density and the unconfined compressive strength.
Experimental results indicate that clay soils exhibited plastic properties with the addition of the two types of chlorides.
In compaction tests as the calcium chloride percentage increase the maximum dry density of the treated soil increases and the optimum moisture content decreases for both the standard and modified compaction.
For soils treated with treated chloride the maximum dry density increases and the optimum moisture content decreases with the increase of sodium chloride percent for both the two types of compaction.
