Abstract

This thesis introduces a new SVC control strategy and a coordinated control between the new SVC control strategy and ULTC. Due to the trend in privatizing the electrical utilities, there is now a large emphasis on equipment to be utilized in an efficient and economic manner. The Static Var Compensator (SVC) is one of the expensive equipments in the power system, which has fast dynamic characteristics that can support effectively system voltage following disturbances. The utilization of the SVC reactive power efficiently is highly needed. This requires a good coordination with other slow reactive power controller like Under Load Tap Changer (ULTC) and controlled-capacitor banks. The thesis introduces a new SVC control strategy with two stages of regulation slopes and two voltage regulation controls. There are fixed-voltage reference control and variable (floating) voltage reference control. A coordinated control between the new SVC control, ULTC and controlled-capacitor banks is also introduced in this thesis. By means of the coordinated control an efficient utilization of the SVC reactive can be achieved. This is simply done by limiting the reactive power output from SVC to desired value during steady-state voltage range and resetting the SVC output after disturbances to be within the steady-state margin. This leads to a reduction in SVC capacity compared to the conventional SVC control. Such a reduction in SVC capacity is of a very positive impact on the cost saving of the expensive element (SVC) in power system. Key Words : Static Var Compensator (SVC), Under Load Tap Changer (ULTC) SVC, Variable reference control, Coordinated control.
