Abstract

Fifteen short R.C. columns were tested under axial compression. The aim of the testes is to study the effect of increasing of longitudinal steel ratio above the Egyptian Code limits, on the strength of tested columns. Two configurations of longitudinal steel arrangement were considered. In the first configuration all steel bars were distributed at the periphery. While in the second one a portion of longitudinal steel was placed at core and the rest were distributed at the outer periphery. The main parameters considered in this study were the longitudinal steel ratio, the ratio between outer and central longitudinal bars and concrete strength. The results of tests were compared with code equations. The comparison shown slightly considerable deviation between test results and code equations at high steel ratio. A proposed equation for the design of RC short columns with high ratios is recommended.
