Abstract

Background: Cirrhotic patients are exposed to high rate of complication especially Hepatic encephalopathy. Focal neurological signs may occasionally be encountered in the course of hepatic encephalopathy. Aim of work: The aim of the current study is screening of focal neurological signs in cirrhotic patients(due to chronic hepatitis B, C, B&C and bilharziasis) associated or not with hepatic encephalopathy. Methods: 40 patients were examined (34 male and 6 females) with liver cirrhosis and hepatosplenic schistosomiasis in addition to 10 healthy volunteers as a control. Full neurological examination, brain CT and Electroencephalography (EEG) was done to all patients and control. Results: Focal neurological signs in cirrhotic patients showed non significant difference with incidence rate of 20 % in this study. chronic hepatitis C (compensated or decompensated) in patients with focal neurological signs showed a significant difference (P < 0.05). History of hepatic encephalopathy showed a significant increase in the group with focal neurological signs (P < 0.05). History of hepatic encephalopathy was the most prognostic factor for occurrence of focal neurological signs in future episodes of hepatic encephalopathy. Conclusion: Hepatic encephalopathy with focal neurological signs when carefully searched is not uncommon in the course of hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhotic patients(due to chronic hepatitis B, C, B&C and bilharziasis).
