Abstract Along the study area, there are different types of Quaternary sediments. These sediments are coral reef terraces, beachrocks, wadi deposits, eolion deposits, sabkha and salina deposits. Coral reefs arranged in a stair case form which called terraces, the lower (youngest), middle and the upper (oldest). According to composition, they classified as pure reefs and mixed reefs. Two types of beachrocks can be recognized; intertidal and supratidal. Wadi deposits composed of gravels, pebbles and sands. They derived from the Precambrian basement rocks. They can be used in road constructions, in building, in ceramic industry and in decoration. Eolion deposits composed of fine sand which is fixed by vegetation. Sabkha deposits composed of siliciclastic and evaporate minerals. Salina deposits composed of multilayered of gypsum beds interbedded with mudstone. Climatic conditions, sea level oscillation and tectonics play a major role in the distribution of these sediments. |
