Abstract Introduction: By the turn of the last century, there has been major growth in researches interested in the biological approach in OCD. Aim of the work: This work was designed aiming at: 1Detection the presence and type of biological impairment (soft signs, structural and neurophysiological brain changes) in patients with OCD by using soft signs scale, MRI and EEG changes. 2defining the relation and correlation between the finding of the biological changes (if any) and different varieties of the disorder such as; severity, duration, family history, cognitive functions, and degree of insight. Patients and methods :This study was carried out on a total sample of 85 subjects (65 patients and 20 controls). The patients and controls was subjected to: A semi structured psychiatric interview, Yale Brown obsessive compulsive scale (YBOCS), Yale Brown obsessive compulsive symptoms checklist Scale for assessment of insight derived from YaleBrown obsessive compulsive scale, Selected items of Wechsler Adult Intelligence scale (WAIS), Wechsler memory scale (WMS), Electroencephalogram (EEG), Neurological examination, Neurological soft signs scale, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) for assessment of caudate volume Results: The statistical analysis showed: 1 Significant structural and neurophysiological abnormalities among OCD patients. In addition Structural and physiological impairment in OCD. 2 Results of soft signs scale, imaging and neurophysiological studies support the involvement of certain brain regions in the pathophysiology of OCD 3 OCD patients commonly suffer from cognitive impairment mainly in the visuospatial and visual memory tasks . 4 Non of the neuropsychological tests can differentiate or characterize the obsessive or compulsive or mixed groups. 5 There was an association between poor insight and cognitive dysfunction. 6 There is no sex differences as regard the severity or the duration of illness which may implies that sex does not determine the illness course or outcome. 7 The high frequency of religious obsession, in this study gives another support for the influence of the culture on the type of symptoms. |
