Abstract This study was conducted on 40 parturients scheduled for elective cesarean section to evaluate the effects of ranitidine and metoclopramide either alone or in combination on maternal and neonatal gastric fluid pH and volume. Parturients were randomly allocated into 4 groups, of 10. First group received nothing and served as control. Second group received ranitidine in a dose of 2 mg.Kg~ orally Third group received metoclopramide 0.1 mg .Kgl intravenously Fourth group received both ranitidine and metoclopramide in the same dossages and routes, all one hour before induction of anaesthesia. Aspiration of all available gastric contents was done just before administration of drugs and just after induction of anaesthesia through a 12 G nasogastric tube into the mothers stomach. All available neonatal gastric contents were aspirated just after deliveny through 8 G nasogastric tube. The volumes of the obtained samples were recorded and the pH was determined. |
