Abstract

A combination of both morphine sulpbate 0.5 mg and 2 ml of 0.5% bapivacaine (marcaine) was injected intra-tbocally in fourteen patients scheduled for anal surgery to assess the efficacy of this combination in anaestbesi~And postoperative analgesia - These patients were maint-ained in the bead up,position for the first 24 boars. This combination gave-an excellent surgical analgesia and a satisfactory postoperative analgesia for at least the first 24 hours * All patients were discharged after 72 hours without need to any analgesic drugs. No cases with respiratory depression were notic’ed .Some side effects in the form of difficulty of mictur-ation i nauseaq vomitingg.itching and postspin.&l head-ache were observed. These side effects were mild and short lasting 9It is concluded that administration of small dose of morphine 0-5 mg with local analgesic drug intrathecally gives satisfactory postoperative anal- gesia of longeT duration and is safe with minimal side effects.
