Abstract Pruritus is one of the common and annoying symptom of chronic renal failure patients. The etiology of uraemic pruritus is still obscure, our investigation was done to document the relationship between pruritus and chronic renal failure and to find any possible relation between the serum and skin concentrations of calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, iron and the occurrence of pruritus in both dialyzed and nondialyzed uraemic patients. This work was carried out on 67 patients suffering from chronic renal failure attending Urology and Nephrology Centre, Mansoura University. They were divided into 4 uraemic groups and a fifth control group. The pruritic uraemic nondialyzed group comprised 21 patients, 20 males and one female, their ages ranged from 29 to 60 years (42.4 +_ 9.2 years). The no n pruritic uraemic nondialyzed group comprised ten patients their ages ranged from 25 to 48 years (36.4 +• 7.7 years) and they were all males. The pruritic haemodialysis group included 24 patients, 20 males and 4 females, their ages ranged from 24 to 54 years (33.6 +_ 6.9 years). The nonpruritic haemodialysis group comprised 12 patients, 11 males and one female, their ages ranged from 19 to 48 years (33 +_ 8.8 years). The control nonuraemic persons included 12 persons, 10 males and 2 females, their ages ranged from 22 to 43 years. |
