Abstract

Acne vulgaris is a very common, multifactoria1 disorder involving the pilosebaceous follicles, occuring mainly in pubertal and postpubertal period. Untill now it represents a clinical problem not in its diagnosis but, in its treatment in spite of recent and different methods of treatment. The major factor in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is the excessive sebum production which occurs mainly due to hyperandrogenaemia of supra renal or ovarian origin as in polycystic ovarian disease which is frequently accompained by acne lesions developing concomitantly with or without other signs of hyperandrogenization as hirsuitsm, androgenic alopecia or seborrhea. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of spironolactone treatment on acne vulgaris in females. We have chosen 20 females complaining of acne vulgaris. Their age ranged from 18-35 years and they were subjected to thorough history taking, medical examination, ultrasound (radiological examination) and laboratory investigations. Fasting venous blood samples were analysed for serum total testosterone (T). Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) and free testosterone (FTI) was calculated.
