Abstract
Melasma is acquired hyperme1anosis of light to dark brown colour which involves the forehead, cheeks and upper lip. Melasma may be idiopathic or occurs in association with pregnancy or ingestion of oral contraceptive pills. Women are usually affected but melasma occasionally seen in men. The present study comprised thirty patients complaining of facial melanosis of chloasmal pattern attending the outpatient clinic of Mansoura University Hospital. The patients were classified into 3 groups: Group I: Comprised 10 female patients with no history of pregnancy or oral contraceptive intake (Idiopathic melasma). Group II: Comprised 10 female patients that developed melasma during pregnancy and/or contraceptive intake. a Group III: Comprised 10 male patients with melasma. Fifteen normal individuals were taken as control groups and they were also divided into 3 groups: Control of group I: Included 5 normal females with no ! . • - • , history of pregnancy or contraceptive
