Abstract
This essay is advocated to present the surgical approaches for the internal auditory meatus . The surgical anatomy of the internal auditory meatus, its shape, dimensions, relations and contents are discussed. There are three primary approaches, middle cranial fossa , translabyrinthine and suboccipital . These primary approaches may be modified or combined to include the retrolabyrinthine, transco-chlear, translabyrinthine-transtentorial and translabyrinthine -suboccipi tal approaches„ The middle cranial fossa approach is usually preserved for small intracanalicular acoustic tumours with good hearing vi/hile the suboccipital approach is advocated for large tumours extending into the cerebellopontine angle with preservation of hearing . The trans¬labyrinthine approach is used for small and medium sized tumours u/ith poor hearing . The last approach allows the early identifica¬tion of the facial nerve within its canal with its preservation . Indications, contraindications, technique, results, advanta¬ges and disadvantages of each of the surgical approaches for the internal auditory meatus are discussed in details . Lastly the complications, its prevention and management are discussed hopping to minimize them in the future .
