Abstract Twenty four rabbits of both sexes were utilized in this study, the animals were divided into six age groups. The ages chosen were, one week, two weeks, two months, four months, one year and two The animals were sacrificed by cervical dislocation and the pancreas was dissected out and two portions of its ,tail were immediatly fixed in Bou Lnv s solution and neutral buffered formalin. Paraffin sections of 5 micrometers were obtained. They were stained with haematoxylin and eosin for demonestration of the general histological picture of the pancreatic islets of Langerhans. For identification of the different islet cells, chromium haematoxylin and phloxine were used for the differentiation of beta cells from alpha and delta cells.Aldehyde fuchsin stain for identification of betaeells and Grimelius silver -’ impregnation technique for identification of alpha cells. From haematoxylin and eosin stained sections, the islets of Langerhans in rabbits appeared as irregular anastomosing cords of cells, surrounded by the exocrine pancreatic acine. The pancreatic islets were variable in shape and size. Nume |
