Abstract

Diabetes and bilharziasis are very common diseases in Egypt. Schistosomiasis is an immunological disease due to various mechanisms. Diabetic nephropathy is the important single disorder leading to renal failure. The ann of this work is to detect the effect of schistosomiasis . (Whether intestinal or. with hepatosplenic affection) on the prevalence of diabetic microangiopathies. One hundered patients from diabetic out-patient clinic were randomly chosen and were evaluated by thorough history, careful clinical examination and investigations in the form of urine analysis, stool analysis, fasting blood sugar, two hours post-prandial, Hb A1C, serum creatinine, creatinine clearence, total protein/24 hours, albumin excretion rate, rectal snip, renal sonography, E.C.G. and tests of autonomic neuropathy and fundus examination. The results of this study show: 1. Significant correlation between albumin excretion rate and duration of diabetes. 2.There is no statistically significant correlation between albumin excretion rate and fasting blood sugar, two hours post prandial and Hb A1C raising doubt on the role of glycaemic control in the development of albuminuria and nephropathy.
