Abstract

This study was carried out to investigate the possible abnormalities in serum cortisol and Some electrolytes (Ionized ca. Na and K) thay may proceed and accompany ECT for depressive illness. The identification of: biological changes ECT and its correlation with clinical outcome possibly would provide clues about the controversial mode of action of this treatment. The material of study comprised 20 patients with the diagnosis of major depressive disorder according to the criteria of DSM III R. They were subjected to : a) full clinical psychiatric study. b) Complete physical examination for fitness to receive electro convulsive therapy. c) laboratory investigations including serum cortisol and serum electrolytes. determined before the start. after the 1st and at the end of ECT course. All results Were tabulated and statistically evaluated and discussed in light of the previous literature. from our stUdy we reached to the following conclusions: Despite numerous previous studies of the ECT.
