Abstract In this study, 50 patients presented with perimenopausal bleeding were evaluated by panoramic hysteroscopic examination after cereful history taking followed by general and local examinations. A hysteroscopically directed endometrial biopsy was done as outpatient procedure without anaesthesia in the outpatient clinic of Gynaecology of Mansoura and Benha University Hospitals. All patients were admitted for full curettage and biopsy under general anaesthesia. The specimen of each procedure was examined histopathologicallY independently and the results were compared and statistically analysed. In this study, metrorrhagia was the commonest presenting symptom in (58%) of cases. The quality of the obtained specimens taken by hysteroscopic guidance was excellent in (70%) of cases, and only two specimens (4%) were found to be unfit for histopathological diagnosis. Endometrial hyperplasia constituted the most common endometrial pattern in the study group (66%) in hysteroscopically directed biopsies, and 74% in full curettage biopsies).
