Abstract

Nothing in human behavior is as basic to the survival of societies as fertility. Yet problems arise at the two extremes of the fertility Bcale, namely infertility on the lower end and excessive f ert i Li tv on the other end. The male contribution towards creating a pregnancy depends, under normal circumstances, on two factors: the potential fertility of the semen and the ability to bring it into direct contact with the semen receptacle in the female. This receptacle is not, as was earlier supposed, the posterior fornix of the vagina but is the cervical mucus carpet that covers the posterior lip of the portio. The number of normal spermatozoa which mingle with the cervical mucus due to the thrusting movements of the peins during ejaculation and the number which pass through the contact ar" ~ "a between semen and cervical mucus after ejaculation determine whether or not there will be conception. This number depends on the density of spermatozoa in the ejaculate, the percentage of spermatozoa with normal morphology and the ability of these seprmatozoa to move from the one fluid (ejaculate) into the other (mucus) . Because this Crossing does not have the help of any ”insuck” from the uterine cavity, apart from the density, it is primarily the percentage of motile
