Abstract Postpartum hemorrhage is one of the obstetric morbidit¬ies that has a broad definition and different ways of classi¬fication. However, it carries an incidence ranges from 3 to 8% of all deliveries and is responsible for 25% of maternal deaths. In this study, the incidence of postpartum hemorrha¬ge in our locality was 1.7% and carried a maternal mortality of one per 1000 deliveries. The primary postpartum hemorrhage occurs within the first 24 hours after delivery of the infant while the secon¬dary type occurs thereafter to the end of puerperium • Also, the primary type is subclassified into a third stage and true postpartum hemorrhage. The first subtype is bleeding before expulsion of the placenta and the second is bleeding subsequent to expulsion of the placenta. The etiological classification of the primary may be atonic, traumatic or a combined form. The three groups carry an incidence of 72% , 4% and 24% in this work respectively. Both the primary whether atonic or .tr auma t Lc , and the secon¬dary postpartum hemorrhage have many different causes whether predipsosing or precipitating. Fortunately some of these fac¬tors are preventable. The preventive measures should start in the antenatal period especially with high risk patients. Also, active man¬agemen" ~ " should be done as soon as diagnosis is established. |
