Abstract

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of Bee. Honey on the infant faecal flora under different types of feeding. The study comprised 30 infants under 2 years of age, who are classified into 3 groups. Group I under breast fed only Group II under formula fed only Group III under mixed feeding All cases were subjected to thorough history taking and clinical examination then colony count, stool culture and identification of the organisms were done to all cases before and after honey intake. Also, in vitro study of all specimens including culture and sensitivily tests of gm-ve bacilli with different antibiotics, honey and concentrated formula of sugar similar to honey before and after oral honey intake. The study has revealed that E-coli and Aeromonas salmonicida predominate in breast fed and mixed feeding groups, but in bottle fed Kl.pneumonia predominate followed by Aeromonas salmonicida. After oral honey intake, this pattern was changed by appearance of new organisms and fluctuation in the incidence of others as significant decrease in the level of Candida and Aer. salmonicida and tendency of E-coli to decrease. Colony count did not show any significant change before and after honey intake. In vitro study of gm-ve bacilli, suppression zones of different diameters were seen around the antibiotic discs while zones of increased growth around honey and sugar but the zone around honey disc was.
