Abstract Thalassemias are heterogBnous group of blood diseases that d to serious health problems and severe social and economic on both the family and society. Thalassemias have been sporadically reperted from Egypt, but ill under-estimated and the preventive progarmmes up-till are not established. The present investigation was planned to study the evalence of the thalasseimas .in Egypt and to assess the need z establishing a preventive programme. For this purpose a survey was c~nducted on two population mples and included randomly selected peoples of different qvinces, social classes and religions. For athalassemia 545 newborns representing different vernorates in Lower and Upper Egypt, their blood was screened r the presence of Hb Bart’s, which is present in a-thalassemia in the neonatal period. We have found a total incidence of Hb Bart’s positive cases about 10.8% which is a much higher value than was previously eported. The Upper Egyptian governorates showed a lower I mcidence compared to Lower Egypt but statistically. |
