Abstract

-93" ~ " The stuctf included" ~ "•39 neonates admitted to the neWlorn intensive . care unit at Ma.nsoura University Hospital. An extensive peri natal history as well as conp Iete record of clinical manifestations were each infant. All cases were subjected to blood culture, blood gastricaspi rate exann nati on (c.el1 count; ng and culture), C.S.F exami nati on and chest X-ray. Our result reveal ed that out of 39 neonates presented by symptoms and signs suspicious of infection, 34 have positive blood culture and 5 have negative blood culture. Among our septicemic cases, 15 died representing a death rate of 44.2 %, b”eing higher in preterms (46.6%) than in full terns (42.1%). The male to female ratio was 1.12. 10 infants had at 1 east one peri natal ri sk factor (premature rupture of menbranes more than 24 hours, antepartum ha" ~ "morrhage, toxaemi a of pregnancy, twin delivery corrplicated by prolonged labour and section). The mean age of onset was 6 days, 17.6% of infants had onset in first 24 hours of 11 fe, 47% had onset after 24 hours - 7 days and 35% h;:H" ~ " onset after first we" ~ "k of life.
