Abstract

In this work, 53 selected cases of different intacranial cystic lesions were studied and analysed so as to show the value of transfontanellar ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging as different imaging modalities in the diagnosis o~ intracranial cystic lesions. Each case was enamored clinically. Transfontanellar ultrasofography was carried out in 9 cases, CT was done in the 53 cases, while MR was done in 24 cases. The collected data were analyzed and compared with the operative results. The final results were compared with results o~ other workers. Lastly, we reached the following conclusion:- Trans~ontanellar ultrasonography has been found to be a very reliable technique. It is the initial investigation ofchoice for imaging the brain of neonates and infants and in many instances it is the only investigation necessary. It is sa~e and non invasive, no sedation is required, there is no ionizing radiation and now that mobile equipment is aVtilable, scans can be per~ormed on sick infant5 in their i~cubators. In addition, the cost o~ US is very low ifcomparad to CT and MR • ~The most important contribution o~ US was in the diagnosis o~ congenital anomalies o~ the brain such as available, scans can be per~ormed on sick in~ant5 in their incubatot-s. In addition, the cost o~ US is very low i~ . c’ompared to CT and MR. . The most important contribution o~ US was in the .- dia’gnosis o~ congenital anomalies o~ the brain such as
