Abstract

Massive small bowel resection has been shown to cause severe nutritional deficiencies and has come to be known as the ”short bowel syndrome ”. It may be associated with loss of part or all of the large int¬estine. This entity is now commonly seen on pediatric wards due to necrotizing enterocolitiS, volvulus, mec¬onium peritonitis, and intestinal atresias, and on surgical wards secondary to regional enteritis, irradi¬ation enteritis, mesenteric vascular disease and Cronb’s disease (Tilson, 1980) • Clinically, malabsorption and malnutrition are the main consequences of short bowel syndrome, producing profound metabolic deficits including severe weight loss, megaloblastic anaemia, hypovolaemia)hypoproteinaemia , metabolic acidosiS, deficiency of fats, fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins and vitamin B12 ’ hypocalcaemia, hypocholesterolaemia, chronic debilitating diarrhoea and gastric hyperSecretion (Conn, et al., 1972) • The resection of 50% of the small intestine and the ileocaecal valve will produce major absorptive def¬iciencies, therefore, the preservation of the ileocaecal sphincter should be attempted in all cases (Cosnes~et al., 1978) •
