Abstract

The gastrointestinal tract may be involved by malignant lymphoma, usually of the diffuse non-Hodgkin’s , types as a primary tumour or as part of a more widespread disease process (Gray et al., 1982) . The peak age incidence of primary gastric lymphoma is in the sixth decade, but age at diagnosis may range from teens to nineties. There is a definite sex predilection, the disease being more common in males than in females. Of all cases of lymphoma of the gastrointestinal tract, approximately 60% occur in the stomach, 30% in the small intestine and 10% in the large intestine (Connors and Wise, 1974) .. Many classifications have b~en proposed for malignant lymphomas of the gastrointestinal tract depending on the peculiar variability of their clinical and histological manifestations and the difficulty of cytologic typing (Robbins and Cortan, 1979). The most common complaint is abdominal pain which is usually epigastric or periumbilical in location in case of gastric lymphoma. In patients with small bowel or large bowel lymphoma, intestinal obstruction is most often the first diagnosis. Less specific symptoms are common und include anorexia, weight loss, nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal haemorrhage (Karl, 1986) .
