Abstract

The rapid and accurate detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis are essential for treatment of infected patients and to control the spread of the disease in population. The aim of this work is to assess new laboratory techniques (PCR, Radiometric culture and serodiagnosis by detection of immunoglobulins)in comparison to the conventional identification methods (ZN, LJ and tuberculin) and also studying antituberculous susceptibility of M.tuberculosis. This study was carried out on one hundred patients. In addition, 20 healthy subjects of matched age, sex and socioeconomic status were selected as controls. They were subjected to laboratory investigations e.g. ZN, culture (LJ, Radiometric), PCR, tuberculin, ESR and serodiagnosis by ELISA technique. Age distribution of tuberculoses cases (I 7) represented 23.5% for age 20-30 followed by 17.7% for each of ages 1-10, 30-40, 40-50 & >60 years. In contrary, age group 10-20 & 50-60 years were zero percent and 5.9% respectively. Regarding sex, males represented 76.5% while females represented 23.5%. The rate of disease is high between the ages of 20-25 years. The increased frequency of male infection may be attributed to their activity, more exposure to overcrowding and Gaza smoking. Regarding occupation, there was a non-significant difference between positive and negative cases in occupation. However, among Tuberculoses cases workers and non employed persons constituted 29.4% for each followed by professional (23.535), then farmers (I 1.76% housewives (5.88%), X-2 2.86 & P >0.05.
