Abstract

Immunosuppressed individuals have an abnormally high ceptibility to infections with non-virulent and minimally pathogenic ’anisms. Many of these individuals contract parasitic infections in ition to numerous infectious episodes with bacterial, viral and fungal ganisms . Although any parasitic infection may be more severe in the . munosuppressed host, certain organisms tend to produce greater thologic sequelae in these patients, while other organisms occur with a ’gher frequency in individuals with certain immune deficiencies. In this work we tried to study the impact of immunosuppression on e frequency of opportunistic intestinal parasites. We also demonstrated e cellular immune response and its relation to some parasitic infections. This study was done over 100 patients complaining of different states of immunocompromisation. They were selected from attendants of Pediatric department and outpatient clinics in Mansoura University. Stool samples and blood were collected from members of the study. Stool examination was done by the following techniques: 1- Zinc Sulfate Flotation Technique. 2- Formalin - Ether Sedimentation. 3- Modified Ziehl- Neelsen Stain. 4- Standard Method for Counting the Number of Cysts and Trophozoites . in the stool. Separation of peripheral blood lymphocytes was done, followed by staining and enumeration of helper and suppressor subsets of T-Iymphocytes. Subsequently, the helper/suppressor ratio was estimated.
