Abstract

Many articles had been written analysing the results of tymanoplasties, but few had paid attention to tympanoplasties performed in childhood, despite the fact that during this period most perforations occur. Some surgeons said that the results of tympanoplasty in children are the same as in adults and it is better to be done as early as possible to restore and preserve hearing, to prevent further ossicular damage, to prevent squamous epithelium from entering the middle ear and forming cholesteatoma, and to give the child a dry, safe and care-free ear. On the other hand, other surgeons said that tympanoplasty in children is more difficult and the results are not as good as in adults, because the narrowness of the ear canal in children may make the surgical procedure difficult, the younger children may not cooperate with surgical and postoperative care, the children are more prone to frequent upper respiratory tract infections and episodes of acute otitis media and the eustachian tube is not fully developed. This study was carried out on 75 children suffering from chronic suppurative otitis media. They were 43 males and 32 females with age ranged form 4 to 12 years.
