Abstract

This study was conducted on 83 subjects who were at risk to develop impaired glucose tolerance or NIDDM. These subjects were categorized into: 1.Obese group comprised 12 subjects. 2.Hypertensive group comprised 16 patients. 3.Chronic renal failure group included 15 patients. 4.Ischemic heart group comprised 10 patients. 5.Senile group comprised 20 subjects selected from the above stated groups. 6.Control groups formed of: a-Healthy control comprised 10 normal healthy subjects. b-Ill control comprised 20 NIDDM patients. All of them were thoroughly examined and fully investigated to exclude diseases or factors that affect glucose tolerance. Each individual was subjected to frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance test (ivGTT): fasting sample (time 0) was taken then 25% glucose solution in a dose of 0.5 g/kg body weight for given followed by measurement of plasma glucose and serum insulin concentrations at time 5,10,15,30,45 and 60 min after iv glucose load. Aimed to evaluate the degree of sensitivity of (3-cells to glucose-induced insulin secretion and sensitivity of tissues to insulin action as an indication of the prevalence of glucose intolerance among the most risky population for insulin resistance and its consequent complication e.g. NIDDM and acute myocardial infarction. The results of this study revealed that: Fasting plasma glucose levels, early glucose AUC, late glucose AUC and glucose half time were significantly elevated in obese, hypertensive and ischemic groups as compared to healthy control group, but they were significantly reduced as compared to ill control group. The senile group showed nonsignificant difference in fasting.
